Focus On Education
The host lost her cool or focus and could not conceal her excitement when she disrupted the interview to give the 'breaking news' of international reggae star Buju Banton (Mark Myrie) being released on bail and to entertain an interview with his lawyer, David Marcus. This disruption or distraction to such an important discussion on education occurred less than 15 minutes before the scheduled newscast at 6 p.m.
I was listening to this discussion on the premises of a primary and junior high school which has a population of 600 pupils. On the school's noticeboard were the names and photographs of 25 top achievers. Only five were boys. Girls far outperforming boys, which is not unique to this school, is duplicated right across our schools and reflected in the enrolment at tertiary institutions. This high degree of disparity is of serious concern and is among the many challenges in our education system.
Studies by psychologists have demonstrated and, indeed, our daily experiences confirm that whatever we focus on dominates in our awareness or consciousness and expands and increases in importance and significance. Focus is essential in the understanding and mastery of any area of life. Education is no exception! As we strive to face, deal with and overcome our many challenges as a nation, let us focus and maintain a consistent and sustained focus on education.

The Art of Life
You are me and I am you, but you are not me and I am not you, and you can never ever be me and I can never ever be you! It is the great paradox of life that we as human beings are all one and the same (and like all existence come from one and the same universal source) and at the same time, however, we are also all uniquely different: none like us, neither before, now, or ever will be.
One of the first challenges of life is an awareness and identity of self, then to know oneself and being true to same. Being true to oneself, is the first and most important step towards self improvement, to harness that power within, to try and maximise and realise one's fullest and unlimited potential.

Diabetes, Symptoms and Signs
Common manifestations of diabetes are excessive thirst which is often accompanied by excessive or additional intake of fluids and increased micturition(ployuria) which often leads to dehaydration. Weight loss, weakness, tingling and numbness in the limbs, itching of the skin or itching in the vulval area in women, poor vision and poor healing of cuts and scratches are the more common manifestations. The diagnosis is confirmed by testing blood glucose levels. It is of utmost importance to mention here that all the symptoms and signs may not be present in an individual. In a number of cases, many individuals are diagnosed when asymptomatic or with just one or two of the common symptoms.
Diabetes can be described as a systemic vascular disease, because the excess glucose forming in the body results in a malprotein formation and this is attached to and causes chronic inflamation of the intima or inner layer of blood vessels. This results in chronic inflammation of the very small to medium size blood vessels. This results in advanced cases to a form of systemic vasculitis and reduced circulation.
The main organs which are usually affected are the brain, blood vessels, heart and kidneys. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness world wide due to increased likelihood of catarcats and glaucoma. Due to cerebaral insufficiency or reduced circulation in the head there is a three to four fold increase in the occurence of ischemic strokes(due to clot formations).
There is also an increased incidence of other cardio-vascular diseases ranging from hypertension, ischemic heart diseases, heart failures and heart attacks(myocardial infarctions), and peripheral vascular disease which is the reducded blood circulation to the limbs and digits which in severe cases cause gangrene, necessitating amputations. This becomes more likely in the presence of infection when poor circulation often adversely affects the body's immune response and adversely retard the healing process.
Diabetics because of elevated blood glucose levels, often impaired circulation and reduced immune response are easily prone to infections. This further increase blood glucose levels causing a vicious cycle and especially in the cases of pneumonia often results in mortality.
The kidneys are also prone to the effects of diabetes causing from nehritis(inflammation) to impairment and especially those whose conditions have been poorly controlled, it becomes a leading cause of renal or kidney failure.
Given the overall detrimental effects that diabetes, which is mainly a lifestyle disease can have it is of utmost important to have measures aimed at prevention, early detection and treatment. These include having a knowledge of one's family history. A first degree relative or realtives having disease indicates increased likelihood. Women having children weighing more than three and a half kilogram at birth, obesity, excess consumption of processed foods and sweets and a sedentary life style resulting in lack of exercises. Symptoms of the disease were outlined earlier.
It is important to have regular checks. For those at increased risks and especially if more than 40 years old, routine blood glucose levels should be checked every six months for early detection. Those adults under 40 and who may not be at increased risk should have an annual test done. Independent of age, once there are symptoms and signs which suggest diabetes the relevant test should be done and if diagnosis is confirmed the appropriate treatment started.
Treatment includes special dietary measures, exercises and for those who are overweight, weight reduction. These measures are sometimes sufficient to control and treat the disease but in the majority of cases added to these measures are tablets called oral hypoglycaemic agents and or the injection of the hormone insulin.
The good news is with proper compliance the diabetic patient will live a normal life with all the regular activities with many extending their life span into the ninties and beyond.

OBESITY IS RISKY! STRIP THAT FAT! GET SLIMMER! LIVE LONGER!
It is therefore not surprising that obesity in those societies is not only encouraged but became synonymous with being healthy. Of no less significance is the fact that in such cultures obese women are deemed to be more attractive, fertile and having greater sex appeal. But obesity in pregnancy predisposes the unborn child to obesity and increases the risks of fetal abnormalities and miscarriages. Obesity increases the likelihood of developing diabetes, hypertension and other medical disorders and also the risks of complications from previously existing ones. It is also of utmost importance to note that, obesity increases significantly the risks (both fetal and maternal) during labour and delivery and is a major contributing factor in perinatal and maternal deaths.
Obesity is a grave risk to health. It is well documented from medical researches that obesity significantly increases the chance of developing cardiovascular diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure(hypertension) and coronary heart diseases. It increases many times the risks of dying prematurely from cancers and the complications of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks , kidney failures and strokes.
Given the overwhelming evidence of the risks of excess body fat or obesity, it is crucial for people to maintain their ideal body weight and in cases of obesity to strip that fit and get slimmer to live healthier and longer.
Strip That Fat: Is a proven effective program to reduce weight and restore health and is highly recommended for all those who are obese, but willing and prepared to make that commitment to the necessary life style changes to reduce weight and restore health and vitality towards longevity.........

OBAMA IN NAME AND NATURE
HOPE is Having Optimistic Projections or Expectations and President Obama, for the majority in America and on the international scene, represents that hope. It is the hope for the type of visionary leadership to ensure the resurgence of the American economy which was going through the worst recession since the ninteen thirties, which resulted in the loss of millions of jobs. America's economic stability and foreign policies have a crucial impact on the world at large and among world leaders his foreign policies are met with approval.
In many respects President Obama has done well. But no man or leader is without enemies, no matter the good deeds he does. Moreover, every leader makes mistakes and the greater his power and sphere of influence the greater will be the impact and undesirable consequences of those mistakes.
It is, therefore, not surprising that there are now well coordinated campaigns to discredit Obama. He is even now, being branded the 'AntiChrist'!!! (Maybe his detractors are simply against Christ!)
Persecution will destroy those who doubt themselves and what they stand for, but always strengthen the faithful. President Obama represents change, hope, peace, progress, prosperity! He should press on because he is a man with a mission, both in name and nature, one who is: Bridging All Races According to Concrete Knowledge, because he Has Unique Skills Signifying Enlightenment Insight Newness! And certainly does Offer a Better Alternative, Mediating Approach!

MONEY MATTERS!
MONEY is a means of negotiating, it empowers you. It is the commonest mean or medium of exchange for goods and services worldwide. Money in circulation is currency and grows as it flows. It is difficult to imagine the modern world without money and the level of development there would have been. In this regard it is one of the greatest catalyst for development and progress. Innovations, inventions, implementing new ideas for increased production and effeiciency, and for improvements in our safety and general comfort level are the main factors that shape the modern world that we live in today.
But all these catalysts for development in most instances are driven by a need, desire or want for money or a greater sum of one of the most desired commodities. Almost everything in this world including the physical and nontangential are given monetary values.
The monetary value placed on things and the nontangential like, labour, skills, services and the all important matters of health and security are not static, and vary considerably in different geographic locations, being influenced by levels of economic development, political stability and the cultural norms and values of a people or society.
So while the Bible speaks of the love of money as the root of all evil, it is of paramount importance to recognise and admit its stabilising force in commerce, a means of measuring value and when applied in accordance with the established guidelines and agreement it is a key factor ensuring fair play, justice, stability. These are of utmost importance in preventing misunderstandings, mistrusts which often lead to tensions, conflicts and wars between individuals, groups of people or between states.
Money matters and matters in every sphere of life. It does cause many ills. But when the rules of fair play are applied, as it empowers it also ensures greater level of peace progress and prosperity.

HAITI! THE DAY EVERYTHING FELL APART!
I watched in disbelief and awe as the earthquake shook and shattered the buildings and everything around us without a pause! Unbelievable, but in the short time it took to pass, it had sought out and destroyed our hope, dreams and joys!
There was much devastation, death and decay as it wrecked our homes, destroying lives, furnishing, clothing, memorabilia and every other valuable thing! Vehicles were crushed, livestock too; that nothing at all was spared was true!
We lost parents, grandparents, great grandparents, husbands, wives, loved ones, children, siblings, many other family members, relatives and friends, neighbours went missing, so did our colleagues, workers and co-workers too!
Communication was cut, no telephone, radio or television sound could be heard! The airport, sea port, and roadways were badly damaged! The presidential palace, house of parliament, police and military institution ruined!
Oh my God, what a catastrophe, no shopping malls, office buildings, hotels or schools were left standing! No hospitals left to help the sick, no churches to inter the dead, everything completely destroyed, only total chaos everywhere instead!
There was so much blood and mangled bodies amidst the dust, in the aftermath of this horrific and horrendous crush! The dead and injured were lying here, there and everywhere; the disoriented, dazed and untouched were all running around in fear!
Then we heard the sobbing, crying and wailing as it filled the air; so piercing, stark and crystal clear, my God it seemed so surreal and drear; as the injured cried out for help; from underneath the rubble and almost everywhere!
We used our hands and feet, pieces of board, a stone or even a sign from the street;, but we never gave up hope we just kept on digging, as we toiled hard to save all those we could, no matter the turmoil and strife that within all of us stood!
Many had died instantly, others took their last breath right before our eyes, countless numbers groaned and suffered in anguish before they died! We saved as many as we could, pulling them out by their head, torso or feet! Yes, another soul barely alive was in the street!
The living sought to understand, they quietly whisper, dear God we have suffered enough, for our blood has been spilt from time immemorial to today's ill! Their voices rang out; this was too much, why Haiti lord? As they tried to make some sense of the onslaught!
Who would have thought that January 12, 2010 would have brought to Haiti this colossal demonstration of unbelievable wrath and fury, leaving millions of people completely distraught and the rest with a broken heart! Not knowing just how to begin or where to restart!

LIVING FOR OTHERS
But let us choose to live for others
And not ourselves alone!
Let us work together in harmony
To make this world a better place
Let us not turn a blind eye
To the suffering and oppression of others!
Let us not pretend to be deaf
To the cries of hardships and hunger
To the cries of the sick and needy
And those who are oppressed and in bondage
But let us feed the hungry, clothe the naked,
Care for the sick and needy
Free those who are in bondage
And give hope to the hopeless!
In our concern for survival
Let us give everyone a chance to survive.
These are not impossible tasks
With time they can be accomplished
We have done great things
But can achieve even greater things
By living for others and not ourselves alone!

HAITI WILL OVERCOME
The response of the international community to the catastrophe in Haiti was phenomenal in the rescue and relief efforts. The government and people of Jamaica in their immediate and initial response, also demonstrated the extent of our concern and care for the people of Haiti. However, the critics and cynics have lived up to expectations and have described this catastrophe and the suffering of the people as punishment from God! Even some people in Haiti were singing this tune. What is the source of this 'enlightenment' and 'revelation'? At the same time, however, one of the fundamental beliefs of Christianity is grace. A high ranking Jamaican official commented ''but for the grace of God, their disaster could have been ours''. Is it that the people of Haiti have not only fallen (like all humanity), from grace but also out of grace?
No Exceptions
Earthquakes although more likely to happen in certain regions and zones, can occur anywhere at anytime. Past occurrences in countries like the United States and Japan show that the rich industrialised countries are no exceptions. Darkness presents the opportunity for light to shine.

LIFE OF LOVE
Living, Learning, Love
Location, Liberation, Love
This is not a definition
It is not an explanation
Nor a reommendation
It is an expression
Of an impression
From daily observation.

Life Otherwise Very Empty!
Let’s live it, let’s love it.

LEARNING THE BASE OF LIFE
A base is the Bottom of Any Structure or Entity and is Built As Supporting Entity or Built As Strategic Entity. Without a solid base or firm foundation a structure will not be stable or even last. This does not only relate to the construction of buildings but is also applicable in, or can be extrapoliated to, all spheres of life.
The principle of a solid base acquires even greater importance in education, whether academic, practical or in skills training. Education is life long learning and life is primarily living and learning from our experiences, where our earlier or previous experiences often serve as the bases.
As we live and learn from our experiences, one of the undisputed ironies of life is: Good judgements come from bad experiences and our best judgements are from the worst experiences!

FADING DREAMS
All the years of hard work
Tiresome and strenuous labour
All that he had worked so long to achieve
Is now fading quickly
Before his unbelieving eyes
In a dreadful tormenting nightmare
He stands helpless, watching
The fading of dreams and success
Retreating from his world
As the fire slowly devours
The last remnants of his house.....
